E-Governance is one of the many flagship applications that my country, Malaysia has been implementing in its on-going efforts to become a developed nation by the year 2020. One of the benefits of E-Governance is to cut down the red tape between the people on the street and those in the higher ranks of the Government. Henceforth, this will result in better governance and speedier execution of public policies and local issues.
IT is supposed to make life easier and faster for normal people like me and sometimes it becomes a drudgery to line up at the local municipal council to pay for your assessment bills. While surfing on the Net this morning, I chance upon this article where a Danish town, Ny Hedensted is going full scale to reach out to its residents using IT technology and emails. They'll send you bills via the internet and you can then pay up electronically without leaving your house. Nifty indeed. I hate jams.
Residents in the town of Ny Hedensted will no longer be receiving bills from the town hall in the mail. On the other hand, neither will they be receiving checks, pay, or any other sort of communication from their town. In order to save DKK 500,000 (EUR 67,000) per year, Ny Hedensted town administrators have decided to phase out postal communication between citizens, replacing it with electronic communication, reports local radio station DR Vejle.
