Novell is going all out on the open source market and they've just unveiled the new SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop on the ongoing Cebit 2006 in Hannover, Germany. This new next-generation enterprise Linux desktop is supposed to offer enhanced power management, integrated desktop search, high-performance graphical interfaces and numerous application improvements based on open source innovation.
This is one notch up for Linux users as they can now expect more powerful integrated office functionality and rock-solid stability needed to drive productivity at a fraction of the cost of current (buggy) Microsoft desktop offerings like Microsoft Office XP and Microsoft Vista. How Novell went about to achieve that is incredible, as they conducted hundreds of distinct usability tests and shot almost 1,500 hours of user interaction video that it used to aid the design of the new SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop.
The Novell edition of the enclosed OpenOffice.org 2.0 suite will also support many Visual Basic macros, solving one of the problems between OpenOffice.org and Microsoft Office documents.
Without a need to even download the Google Desktop software, it includes an incredible file and content search that frees business users from the perils of navigating the file system, allowing immediate access to documents, graphics, e-mail messages, chat sessions, Web pages and other content by typing just a keyword.
SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop also features powerful Xgl-based graphical capabilities, fast boot technology, improved power management and suspend, enhanced wireless device integration, Bluetooth support and better application security with Novell AppArmor.
SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop is scheduled to be available in the summer of 2006 and more information can be found here.
