Portable Document Format (PDF) is an open standard file format, proprietary to Adobe Systems, for representing two dimensional documents in a device independent and resolution independent format.
David Heiner, Microsoft's deputy general counsel, said Adobe had wanted Microsoft to charge customers for the ability to save Office documents in either the PDF format or Microsoft's new, competing XPS format.
Reacting to that proposal from Adobe, Microsoft has decided to remove native PDF printing support from Office 2007 aka Office 12 which is due in January 2007 with Windows Vista. However, Microsoft will provide a free plug-in (or Office 2007 SP1) that will allow Office users to export files in PDF or XPS format from Word, PowerPoint or Excel programs.
No native PDF printing on Office 2007 source
