Microsoft will now support Open Document Format (ODF)
openofficelogonew.gifI can't believe my eyes. Is Microsoft getting soft ?

Back in May 2006, they took a swipe at the Open Document Format (ODF) and said they'd rather have XML or starve to death. Microsoft's XML file format of choice is Microsoft Office Open XML, which will become the default file format for Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents in Office 2007.

Now they are announcing that they will fund a project on Sourceforge.net led by three independent software vendors (ISVs) to create a free plug-in that allows users to natively save files in ODF within Office 2007, as well as convert files in Office 2007's OpenXML format to ODF and back. Holy Office scams. Maybe the recent EU fine issue is kicking their brains into motion and they don't want OpenOffice.org and Sun Microsystems's StarOffice to eat too much into their bread and butter. Good luck in making this choice.
