I did not know that the Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (Wimax) has 2 main spectrums until just recently when Malaysia's Energy, Water and Communications Ministry cancelled a tender for the Wimax 2.3 Ghz spectrum. The 2 main spectrums are 2.3Ghz (mobility) and 3.5Ghz spectrums.
WiMAX is basically the future of wireless internet and its "a standards-based technology enabling the delivery of last mile wireless broadband access as an alternative to cable and DSL." According to WiMAX vendors, each WiMAX node or "base station" would enable high-speed Internet connectivity between homes and businesses in a radius of up to 50 km (31 miles).
The 2.3Ghz spectrum is a mobility standard for WiMax which provides users with Internet broadband mobility not available under the 3.5Ghz spectrum as the latter only provides internet access from a fixed area. With 3.5Ghz, you can't take your mobile notebook from one WiMax hotspot and then jump on a bus and remain connected. You can't move from one cell to another WiMax cell and you need to stay within the hotspot area.
With Mobility WiMax, it hands over you signals from one cell to another and its akin to 3G or UMTS internet access.
