In a research released last week by Analyst group Gartner called, Vista Will Be the Last Major Windows Release as We Know It, the analyst group claims that the trend of building new Windows Operating Systems may be changed thanks to the virtualisation technology which will soon be integrated into the operating systems. This will result in faster turnaround time, flexibility and modularity of software development.
Gartner states that the current method of rationalising the complexity of the operating system by rebuilding Windows into a stack of more than 50 discrete layers, is not keeping up with the times and virtualisation methods should be employed.
"Once Windows includes virtualisation at its core, we expect OS deployment to change direction from integration to modularisation. Microsoft will then use modularity to change the packaging and delivery model for future versions of Windows," the report stated.
According to Bob Muglia, senior vice president of Microsoft's server and tools business, improved virtualisation technology, known as hypervisor, will not come with Vista Server, but as an add-on utility.
