My name is Scott Gunelius, and I am the new author for Know More Media's ITechTips blog. I have been working in the IT field for the past 18 years supporting the federal government and Fortune 500 companies including divisions of Pfizer, Prudential, Unisys and Verizon Wireless.
My career in the IT field started while I was serving in the U. S. Coast Guard, and I made the fortunate mistake of ignoring the well-known military rule "never volunteer for anything" and assisted with the installation of several new workstations in my office. I found that I had a real knack for the work, developed an intuitive troubleshooting capability and more importantly, could encourage people to lay aside their fear of the technology so they could use it to help them work more effectively & efficiently.
I enjoyed the challenge of continually learning to keep pace with the hardware advancements predicted by Moore's Law and the software being implemented to leverage the capability of this new hardware. I also had the satisfying opportunity to teach in a formal classroom, develop training materials and discovered just how much energy/enthusiasm is necessary to persuade non-technical people to use that large & expensive paperweight on their desk for the intended purpose, making their lives easier.
I am an advocate for server/storage consolidation and virtualization. I am a VMware Certified Professional (VCP) and have found server virtualization to be a very effective technology for reducing capital and operating expenses within datacenters. As onerous a job as documentation can be, I have learned how important it is to know what you have before focusing on what you want when it comes to any sort of consolidation or virtualization effort.
I have 3-year old triplets and a wonderful wife who are the center of my universe. The triplets keep us especially busy as they are getting faster, smarter and often remind my wife and I that no matter what happens; we will always be outnumbered.
