Well, now that Apple (NasdaqGS: AAPL) has generated quite the buzz about their iPhone, they have reduced the price from a whopping $599 to just $399, which makes it much more of a contender against the Palm Treo and the Motorola RAZR2 smartphones.![]()
If you want to penetrate a tight market like this, you have to be willing to compete and it looks like Apple is making a run. I'll be curious to see how the other smartphone vendors respond and what'll happen to prices as we get closer to the holiday shopping season.
Now we just need to know if there is any possibility of other cellular providers being offered the chance to support the iPhone on their networks, because the one sticking point for a lot of people is the exclusivity AT&T has with the iPhone deal. It doesn't sound like the plans to offered "cracked" or modified iPhones is going to fly without a serious legal fight from AT&T. If Apple wants some of the global marketshare for smartphones, I think they'll have to investigate inking deals with other providers.
I haven't looked at an iPhone yet and don't know anyone who has one. Have you made the plunge and bought one? Are they seeing use in the workplace yet for synchronizing e-mail or other business apps? If so, I'd like to hear from you.
