Threat Thursday: Directory Harvest Attack (DHA)

I'm publishing this post a bit late, but think it still important to keep folks informed of what the hacker/spammer crowd may be up to.  For quite some time now I've been getting calls from my customers complaining that they're receiving Non-Delivery Receipt (NDR) messages (unable to deliver) from people they don't recall ever corresponding with and regarding subjects such as "male enhancement" or  a certain stock.  In some instances they may be receiving a response that their message has been blocked because it was suspected of being spam.GrainCombine.jpg

Now either these folks have an evil, spamming alter ego and "Hyde" has been having a little fun, or their e-mail address was acquired, probably through a directory harvest attack (DHA), and a spammer is using that e-mail address as the sender to give their spamogram a veneer of legitimacy.

Unfortunately there isn't much you can do in these cases, because once your address is being used in a spam database, the spammers will continue to use it.  Unless you want to go to the trouble of changing your e-mail address, your best bet is to just delete the NDR or response message.

One thing to watch out for is that your address isn't blacklisted and you start having difficulty corresponding with legitimate recipients.  If you suspect this, contact the recipient(s) directly, ask that their appropriate messaging resource or service provider to investigate and if you have been blacklisted, they can reinstate your address as a valid sender.
