I've been hearing a lot in the past few weeks about Google Inc. (Nasdaq: GOOG) and a few other companies working to release an open-source operating system for mobile phones. The Open Handset Alliance intends to release a platform called Android. This is named for, and based on the technology of, a company acquired by Google in 2005.![]()
Android consists of a Linux-based kernel and various components from which manufacturers can pick and choose what they want to include on their handsets, all without charge. I guess this is the big challenge to Apple's iPhone and considering all bad press, not to mention lawsuits that have been leveled against Apple & AT&T for their exclusivity deal & locked down handset; I'm going to have to pay more attention to Android in the future.
Where's Microsoft in all this you ask? Well, one of the manufacturers that has joined the alliance, HTC, was a long-time partner providing the Windows Mobile OS to their handsets. Microsoft can't be all too pleased about this. So, hopefully this will mean lower prices for the consumer and a broader range of choices when it comes to a handset that can do more than just make/receive calls.
