I've been on a bit of a kick with Hewlett-Packard Co. (NYSE: HPQ), so here we go again...I had the opportunity to use HP's ProLiant Essentials Server Migration Pack - Physical to ProLiant (P2P) Edition several months ago to migrate an Outlook Web Access (OWA) server that had been hosted on a very old Compaq DeskPro to a "newer" ProLiant server, so at least I was running this key component of our messaging infrastructure on server-class hardware with some redundancy.![]()
I had originally planned to install a new operating system on the ProLiant server, install/configure Internet Information Services (IIS), Exchange Server, etc., but there were additional customizations on the server that I thought would be difficult to duplicate. The answer; Use P2P and clone the legacy OWA server to the ProLiant and it worked like a charm, probably saving me at least a full day's effort. There's an online demo of the product and the migration was as easy as illustrated.
HP had recently announced their Server Migration Pack - Universal Edition, which combines their HP ProLiant Essentials Server Migration Pack and HP ProLiant Essentials Server Migration Pack - Physical to ProLiant Edition. One product now handles both physical and virtual migrations:
- Physical to ProLiant (P2ProLiant)
- Virtual to ProLiant (V2ProLiant)
- Physical to Virtual (P2V)
- Virtual to Virtual (V2V) - Migrate between VMware and Microsoft virtual machines
If you're planning on performing some physical server consolidation using P2V, you may want to look at this product and see if it can help you quickly virtualize some of your existing servers. If you have some legacy hardware or servers you inherited from acquisition/divestiture activity and you want to standardize on or upgrade to newer ProLiant servers, this product may be a real boon.
