I just ran across an article on Ars Technica about problems with plans to provide WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) throughout the nation. In August of 2006, Sprint Nextel announced that it would be investing $3 billion dollars over the following two years to build out its so-called "fourth generation" (4G) network, but the partnership forged with another provider, Clearwire, has fallen apart.![]()
Sprint Nextel is still moving forward with WiMAX tower builds in Chicago and Baltimore/Washington in preparation for a launch at the end of the year, so they still seem committed to the technology. What kind of impact do you think WiMAX will have on consumers and businesses?A statement from Clearwire said that "the joint build transaction originally contemplated by the previously announced letter of intent was likely to introduce a level of additional complexity to each party's business that would be inconsistent with each company's focus on simplicity and the customer experience."
